The story of this dish
The original tteokbokki was a mild royal-court dish of rice cakes stir-fried with soy sauce, beef and vegetables. In the 1950s, vendor Ma Bok-rim began selling rice cakes in a fiery gochujang sauce in Seoul's Sindang-dong, and the red version took over. The neighbourhood is still lined with tteokbokki restaurants.
